ALL ABOUT UKULELE STRINGS
The humble ukulele is perfect for music education—it's fun, inexpensive, portable and surprisingly versatile—so it's no wonder it has become popular in primary schools as an alternative to the much-maligned recorder. Teaching ukulele in primary schools can provide students with a wealth of benefits, from improving fine motor skills and coordination to boosting self-confidence and creativity.
As the popularity of ukuleles has grown, so has the demand for different types of ukes. Different tonewoods aside, there are four main different types of ukuleles on the market—we list them here in ascending order of size:
Soprano The classic ukulele that most players start out with. The shorter scale and smaller body provide its traditional 'plinky' sound.
Tuning: G/C/E/A | Average size: 53cm long
Concert Its slightly longer scale allows for extra frets and extra spacing between them , which is ideal for adults and those with larger fingers.
Tuning: G/C/E/A | Average size: 58cm long
Tenor Much louder than the smaller ukes, the tenor sounds quite close to a classical guitar and offers even more space on the neck.
Tuning: G/C/E/A | Average size: 66cm long
Baritone This is the largest common-sized ukulele and offers a lot of bass and resonance. It's tuned like the top four strings of a guitar and feels much more like a small classical acoustic.
Tuning: D/G/B/E | Average size: 76cm long
Spider Music offer all of the above with many colour and wood options and Rotosound has ukulele strings made specifically for each of these uke sizes:
Rotosounds long-running RS85 set is designed to work with a range of tunings but they also offer size-specific ukulele strings, gauged to carry the ideal tension at each scale length. We use a special Nylgut® material sourced from Aquila, a synthetic material that imitates the acoustic characteristics of gut but without the high cost, short string life, and severe instability to changes of climate. It's also vegetarian- and vegan-friendly.
Thanks to Rotosound for this.
